Ka tangi te pīpīwharauroa, ko te karere a Mahuru
The shining cuckoo calls, it is the messenger of September.
The call of the pīpīwharauroa signals the start of Kōanga, a time of renewal and new beginnings. As we emerge into spring, we celebrate important anniversaries, share action we can take in the face of the continuing challenges to Te Tiriti, and let you know about inspiring experiences and opportunities.
This year marks 50 years since: Te Hikoi, the land march lead by Dame Whina Cooper; the first Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori; and the establishment of the Waitangi Tribunal – all of which have contributed to significant change in Aotearoa. In the context of the government’s continued attacks on Te Tiriti it’s important to recognise the positive shifts in our communities over the last 50 years and to honour the vision and commitment of those involved through continued action.
One action many of us can take right now is to vote. By now, you should have received your papers for voting in local government elections. In many parts of the country, you can show your support for fair, inclusive local decision-making through voting to keep Māori wards and constituencies. Whether or not your council is having a poll, you can vote to support Te Tiriti honouring through finding out about the commitment of those standing in your area to ensuring Māori voice in local decision making and supporting partnerships between councils and mana whenua.
At Groundwork, we’re encouraged by the work of organisations and individuals committed to deepening their everyday action to uphold Te Tiriti. In this pānui we share some of this work and opportunities we provide for individuals and organisations to go beyond initial understanding and to take meaningful Te Tiriti honouring action with the support of our team. You’ll also find resources on Māori wards and constituencies, and we highlight other new resources and great exhibitions.
We hope that this brings you energy and vitality.
