Kia ora koutou katoa,

We join in expressing our deep sadness at the passing of Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero Te Tuawhitu. His inspiring and unifying leadership has been a vital force, and his loss is keenly felt. Moe mai rā i te rangimārie, e te Kīngi.

This loss comes at a time that may be greatly challenging for many of you given the harmful actions of the coalition government. We hope this newsletter finds you well and that kōanga brings warmth and energy to you.

While it is important to respond to government actions, we mustn’t lose sight of the exciting and hopeful actions happening in our communities, which many of you may be contributing to. Recent examples include councils coming together in support of Māori wards, the recognition of Māori writers and stories of Aotearoa at the New Zealand Children’s Book Awards, and other inspiring community kaupapa.

We enjoy sharing these stories on social media and want to acknowledge this amazing work. We also want to acknowledge all the people who are speaking up and speaking out at this time while continuing everyday mahi. Your work inspires hope that keeps our collective fires burning.

In this pānui, we share some of our most recent resources to support better understanding of key Te Tiriti issues. These include a new Treaty Principles Explainer and a webinar exploring the key issues with current government action. We provide a reflection on Māori wards and are thrilled to introduce you to our new Groundwork associate, Steph Turner, who we are excited to be collaborating with.

We trust you find some sustenance in what we share.

Mauri ora,
Jen, Victoria, Hannah, and Jordan – the Groundwork team.
