The importance of haumi

Tēnā tātou katoa,

Tēnei te mihi maioha ki a koutou.

We are only three months in to 2024 and yet so much continues to change around us. We imagine you may be feeling as many emotions as we are in relation to some of the rapid unravelling of years of work towards Te Tiriti honouring – shock, anger, confusion, exhaustion? And yet, collectively, we carry on with this mahi ia rā, ia rā – maintaining focus on the horizon.

We have been focusing on the hopeful messages of Hui-ā-Motu, primarily, the role for allies/haumi. One of the strong messages shared during the gathering was the importance of tangata Tiriti taking a stand at this time. This might involve communicating positively, clearly, and widely our support of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and educating ourselves and others on the importance of Te Tiriti for our communities and shared future.

This month, we highlight the awesome Te Tiriti-based Futures & Anti-Racism 2024 event to support us on this path (see our event workshop promotion). We also share new resources and Jen’s recent blog which is a brief reflection on the current times and an encouragement for haumi to act.

Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui e hoa mā.

Mauri ora,

Jen, Victoria, Hannah, and Jordan – the Groundwork team.
