Toitū Te Tiriti

Kia ora koutou katoa,

As many of us begin to wrap up this calendar year, we mihi to all of you who have taken action in support of Te Tiriti during such a significant (and exhausting) past 12 months.

In particular, we celebrate Hīkoi mō te Tiriti and the kotahitanga of this massive collective action. The strength and peacefulness of the hīkoi – which gained attention and support from all over the world – reflects the amazing work by the organisers, mana whenua, tangata whenua and tangata Tiriti volunteers, and all those who took part. This expression of love for, and commitment to, Te Tiriti fills us with hope.

As we prepare for 2025, we remain focused on sustaining and nurturing that momentum while continuing to grow a shared understanding of Te Tiriti across our communities. Through our resources and mentoring we’re equipping people to participate in conversations and actions to affirm Te Tiriti.

Parallel to this, we continue our work with organisations dedicated to deepening their Te Tiriti understanding and action. We’re grateful to these organisations and particularly to Māori leading this mahi. We’re heartened by the on-going work to strengthen organisational Te Tiriti action. He mihi maioha ki a koutou katoa.

It’s been a busy few months and in this pānui we share some of our work. Our popular Te Tiriti conversation guide has recently been updated to include a Treaty principles Q&A section. Jen’s most recent blog is based on a recent oral submission on the Marine and Coastal Areas Act Amendment Bill. If you haven’t done an oral submission before and are planning to submit on the Treaty Principles Bill, the blog can give you inspiration. We also have a new Toitū Te Tiriti webinar to share. And you can now gift our online workshops to others, and we have a promotion to encourage you to share Te Tiriti learning with your loved ones these holidays.

Ngā mihi o te wā o Hineraumati – we wish you all a restful and enjoyable summer season.

Mauri ora,
Jen, Victoria, Hannah, and Jordan – the Groundwork team
